:: gizmos & gear::

it's about the sound, not the contraptions... but we monkey around with a lot of stuff...

SDIY Diary

we used to be famous for performing "the soldering piece"—sitting on stage 5 minutes before the show, feverishly trying to coax some homebrew gadget back to life... now we don't do that on stage as often, but we're still huffing solder fumes in the basement... here's a few of the latest additions to the rig

CGS Tube VCA

One of Ken Stone's new designs, see his site for details.

The PCB board can be split in half to fit better behind a frac panel, which worked out well... see side and back view for detail.

The tube glow is pretty faint by itself, but there's a couple of LEDs behind it to eat some extra current and add to the aura. So I left a window to show that off. Here's the FPD file if you want to make your own. This is laid out for alpha 16mm pots—adjust if you use some other size pots.

CGS Synthacon Filter--Frac format

Ken also did a new version of his classic Synthacon filter, re-laid out to go behind a eurorack panel. Here's a frac-rack format FPD file for that, as well.

I got the PCB-mount pots from Mouser; but couldn't find a US source for the jacks... so i used my usual Kobbiconn jacks and wire... the wiring still looks pretty clean.

Quad Linear VCO

Four linear VCOs using the 8038, using a design by Thomas Henry, and boards by Elby Designs (no longer available).

The switches next to the freq. control are range switches, regular or LFO. Two CV ins per oscillator with attenuators. They're semi-normaled as two pairs: on Osc. 1 & 2, the CV2 inputs are normaled to the tri outputs of each other... likewise on Osc. 3 & 4. So you have easy access to 2 pairs of cross-modulated oscillators—complex rhythm LFOs, or screeching weasels in the audio range. Plugging into CV2 jacks over-rides the normalization.

From the descriptions, these might be similar to the core functions of the 2 Livewire modulators (dalek and vulcan), but I have no idea if they are in fact similar.
